Unblock CurseForge and open the Minecraft mod listings

Type curseforge.com into the launch box, press Launch, and the mod listings arrive in the tab you were already looking at, with the game picker and the browse columns you use to find anything there. On a network that has CurseForge blocked, that is all of it: nothing to install, no account, no second device. Your browser does not connect to curseforge.com. Its requests go to one of our own addresses, and that address carries CurseForge’s inside it, encoded rather than spelled out.

The usual answer to a blocked site is to install a VPN, and it only helps if the computer is yours to change. Plenty are not: a school laptop, an office desktop, a machine in a library, a phone on somebody else’s network. TrickyBird is a web proxy, a page you open rather than a program you install, and opening a page is not something a device policy has an opinion about.

We opened the Minecraft section, which is the busiest part of the site and the reason most people go looking for it, and it came up whole: the browse columns, the game list, the mod entries with their pictures. Downloading a mod file is the other thing people come here for, and that one we have not checked, so this page does not speak for it.

Is www.curseforge.com blocked on your network?

The check asks www.curseforge.com for one small file directly from your connection, not through TrickyBird, so your network can see that request like any direct visit.

How does TrickyBird open CurseForge?

Your browser talks to TrickyBird, and TrickyBird is what talks to CurseForge. It fetches the page, rewrites the HTML, the CSS and the JavaScript so every link, image and later request points back through its own address, and leaves a service worker in the tab to catch whatever loads after that. CurseForge builds most of what you see after the page has arrived rather than sending it finished, so that service worker keeps working for as long as you are on the site.

The listing pictures come from a different host than the pages do; that is ordinary for a catalog this size, and it is the kind of thing a proxy has to follow rather than assume. It followed them, and the pictures were in the listings where they belong rather than empty frames with a filename underneath.

Why is CurseForge blocked on some networks?

Filters work by category rather than by site, and a catalog of downloadable files usually gets filed under games. That is why CurseForge can be closed on a school or office network and open on the next one, and why the block is almost never aimed at you in particular.

If what you actually want is something to play in the tab rather than a file to put into a game you already have, CrazyGames and Poki are that, and they have pages of their own.

What about downloading a mod file?

Not checked yet, and that is the honest answer rather than a careful one. What we opened and read were the listing pages: the categories, the game list, the mod entries and their pictures. Taking a file off the site is a separate step, with its own buttons and its own redirects. Until that has been run, this page does not claim it. Search and signing in stand exactly where the download stands, for the same reason.

Can I open CurseForge without a VPN or the desktop app?

Yes. There is nothing to download and no administrator prompt to get past, because TrickyBird is a page rather than a program: you open it in the tab you already have. The CurseForge desktop app is a separate thing, and reading the listings does not need it.

Can I download a mod through TrickyBird?

We do not know yet, and would rather say that than guess. Browsing is the part that has been checked: the section pages, the game list and the listing pictures all came up through the proxy. Taking a file off the site is a step we have not run, so it is not something this page will tell you works.

Do I need a CurseForge account?

Not to browse. The listings, the categories and the game list all open without one. Signing in is a separate matter and is not covered here, so if you were going there to manage your own account, read that part as untested.

Which parts of CurseForge did you open?

The Minecraft section: the browse pages, the categories down the side, the game list, and the mod entries with their pictures. CurseForge carries plenty of games besides Minecraft and those pages are built the same way, but Minecraft is the one we actually opened.

Does CurseForge see my IP address?

No. CurseForge sees the connection arriving from TrickyBird, not from you. To run the service and curb abuse, the edge keeps a short access log: a shortened form of your IP address, the hostname of the site you connected to, and basic response details, kept for at most 48 hours, with no TrickyBird account for any of it to attach to.
