Does incognito mode get past a blocked site?
No. Incognito mode, also called private browsing, does not unblock websites. It only stops your browser from saving history, cookies, and site data on the device you are using. The block itself lives on the network you are on, a school or work firewall, an ISP, or a site’s region filter, and that network never sees your incognito setting, so it is left completely unaffected.
You hit a blocked site, so you open it again in an incognito window, half expecting the block to lift. It does not, and it helps to understand why before you spend time on it. Incognito mode, also called private browsing, was built to keep your activity off the device you are using, not to change anything the network around you can see. A network block does not live on your device, so a setting on your device cannot move it. Does incognito mode unblock websites?
No. Incognito mode does not unblock websites, and it was never meant to. Private browsing is a local privacy feature: it stops your browser from saving your history, your cookies, and what you type into forms on the device you are using. Notice what is not on that list. Why do people think incognito unblocks sites?
The confusion is understandable, and it comes down to one word. The feature is called private browsing, and its opening screen is about privacy, so it is easy to read that as being hidden from the network. What it really means is private from other people who use this device, not private from the network carrying your traffic.
Here is what actually happens when you open a blocked site in an incognito window. Your browser sends the same request to the same address it always would. The network’s filter reads the destination of that request and checks it against its block list, exactly as it does in a normal window. The filter never receives your incognito setting, because that setting stays inside your browser and is never sent anywhere. The same holds for a site limited to another region. A region filter decides what to show by looking at your IP address, and incognito does not change your IP. The page sees the same location as before and returns the same result.
Where a network block actually lives
A block sits on the network you are using, not on your device and not in your browser settings. It might be a school or office firewall, the Wi-Fi filter at a library or a cafe, an ISP filtering for a whole country, or a site’s own region lock. Because the block lives out on the network, the only settings that can affect it are ones the network can see. Incognito is not one of them. It is a switch inside your browser that governs what your device stores, and the network never learns whether it is on or off. To get past a block, you have to change what the network sees, and that takes a different kind of tool.
What actually gets past a network block
If the block reads the destination of your request, the way around it is to send the request somewhere the block does not apply. That is what a web proxy does.
