What is a VPN, and what is a web proxy?
A VPN (virtual private network) routes your whole device through an encrypted tunnel to a server the provider runs. Every app on the device sends its traffic through that tunnel, not only the browser, and to the sites you visit your connection appears to come from the VPN server. Setting one up means installing an app or a browser extension, and on a managed device that is exactly the step you may not be allowed to take.
A web proxy is a website that opens another site for you. You paste a link, the proxy fetches the page over its own connection and serves it back through its own address, all inside the browser tab you already have open. Nothing installs and no account is needed. When should you use a VPN?
A VPN is the right tool when you control the device and want broad, always-on coverage. Does a web proxy hide your IP the way a VPN does?
Yes, though the coverage is narrower. Both tools put a server between you and the site, so the site sees that server’s IP instead of yours: the VPN server in one case, the proxy’s server in the other. The difference is reach. A VPN does this for every app on the device, while a web proxy does it for the site you open in the tab. Your own network also sees only a connection to the proxy, not to the site you opened through it.
Is a web proxy as private as a VPN?
They protect different things, so “as private” depends on what you are measuring.
