Unblock Reddit without a VPN or an app

Reddit through TrickyBird is the classic old.reddit layout: subreddits and comment threads, loaded through TrickyBird’s own address in the tab you already have. Paste reddit.com, press Launch, and you are reading, with no app to download and no account to create.

Reddit is one of the first names a filter files under social media, so it disappears on office networks, guest Wi-Fi, and most managed connections. The advice that follows is always to install a VPN, which assumes a device willing to accept new software, and the devices sitting behind those filters usually are not. TrickyBird skips the install: anything with a browser opens it, a desktop or a phone.

Serving the classic layout is a deliberate choice. old.reddit is light, it comes through the proxy whole, and threads read the way they read on a direct visit, on a monitor and on a phone-sized screen. The redesign at www.reddit.com sits behind an anti-bot check that interrupts even a plain direct visit, so we do not send you there.

What to expect from Reddit

Subreddits and comment threads read clean in the old.reddit.com layout, on a monitor and on a phone-sized screen.

Is reddit.com blocked on your network?

The check asks reddit.com for one small file directly from your connection, not through TrickyBird, so your network can see that request like any direct visit.

One of our addresses, with the site’s encoded into it

The site loads in the tab you are already in, and this address will not always look the same, since sometimes it is only numbers.

How does TrickyBird open Reddit?

You submit reddit.com in the console and press Launch. TrickyBird fetches the page on its own servers, rewrites the HTML, CSS, and scripts so every link and request in it points back through its own address, then streams the result to your tab. Your browser does not connect to reddit.com: what it asks for instead is one of our own addresses, which carries the Reddit address inside it, encoded rather than spelled out.

For Reddit it serves old.reddit.com on purpose. The classic design leans on pages built on the server rather than the redesign’s heavy client-side machinery, so a subreddit and a long comment thread come through without drama.

What works on Reddit right now?

Reading, which is what most people here are cut off from. Subreddits and comment threads in the old.reddit layout came through clean in our checks, on a monitor and on a phone-sized screen, so a thread looks the same in a mobile browser as it does on a desktop. Image links in a thread often point at Imgur, which opens through TrickyBird as well.

Public subreddits and threads open without logging in, no Reddit account and no TrickyBird account. If a community is private on Reddit itself, it stays private through the proxy. TrickyBird does not open doors Reddit keeps shut.

Does the network see that I am on Reddit?

No. Your browser does not connect to reddit.com, and that address travels encoded rather than spelled out inside one of ours, so what the network sees is a connection to TrickyBird. Reddit, for its part, sees the connection coming from TrickyBird rather than from your IP address. Both halves hold at once: the site hidden from the network, your address hidden from the site.

What is left on our side is deliberately small. To run the service and stop abuse, the edge keeps a shortened form of your IP address, the hostname of the site you connected to, and basic response details, kept for at most 48 hours, and the session itself expires after about an hour. Which threads you read is not recorded, and there is no account tying any of it together.

Questions

How do I unblock Reddit at school or work with no download?

Open TrickyBird in your browser, paste reddit.com, and press Launch. It all happens in the tab, so there is nothing to install and no admin permission to ask for, which is what makes it work on a machine somebody else administers. Reddit comes up in the old.reddit layout, ready to read.

Does TrickyBird open new Reddit or old Reddit?

old.reddit.com, deliberately. The classic layout comes through the proxy reliably, while the redesign runs an anti-bot check that interrupts even a plain direct visit. For reading subreddits and comment threads, the classic layout carries everything you came for.

Does Reddit work on my phone through TrickyBird?

Yes. Reddit is one of the sites we check in a mobile browser as well as on a desktop, and a subreddit behaves the same on the small screen. Nothing installs there either; it runs in whatever mobile browser is already on the phone.

Does Reddit see my real IP address?

No. Reddit sees the connection coming from TrickyBird, and the network you are on sees TrickyBird rather than reddit.com. The edge keeps a shortened form of your IP address and the destination hostname for at most 48 hours, with no account attached, and our security page sets out what is stored.
