Unblock GIPHY and find the GIF you came for

You came for one GIF and giphy.com will not open. To unblock GIPHY, paste the address into TrickyBird and press Launch. The site comes up in the same browser tab, on one of our own addresses, and the trending grid is already there when it arrives. Nothing installs on your side. We do not ask you to register either.

A filter almost never has anything against GIPHY in particular. It gets swept up in whichever category a network has decided to close, and what you read next is usually to install a VPN app, on a device whose entire policy is that you do not install things, which is the point where the standard advice stops being advice. A web proxy has no installer for anyone to refuse: you open it in the tab already in front of you.

Most people meet GIPHY without ever visiting it, through the GIF button inside a chat app, so arriving at giphy.com yourself is the less common route and it is the one this page is about. What you get there is the whole library rather than whatever slice a keyboard hands you: the trending grid on the way in, then a search box and a wall of results. Your browser does not connect to giphy.com: its requests go to one of our own addresses, which carries the GIPHY address inside it, encoded rather than spelled out.

What to expect from GIPHY

The trending grid comes up with its GIFs moving, and a search returns a page of results that arrive the same way. All of that was signed out, on a desktop; signing in is a question we have not put to it.

Is giphy.com blocked on your network?

The check asks giphy.com for one small file directly from your connection, not through TrickyBird, so your network can see that request like any direct visit.

How does a GIF get from GIPHY into your tab?

TrickyBird asks GIPHY for the page and rewrites the answer before it reaches you. Every link, every thumbnail and every request the page will make later points back through our own address. A small script then stays in the tab and does the same for whatever the grid pulls in as you scroll it.

A page like this is barely a page: it is a thin frame around a few dozen moving GIFs, and those GIFs come from a host of GIPHY’s own rather than from the address you typed into the box. Carry only the frame and the grid draws itself around nothing. Through TrickyBird the GIFs travel the same route as the page around them, which is why the grid arrives filled in and moving.

The same holds for everything GIPHY fetches after the first screen: more of the grid as you scroll, the artwork on a category page, a single GIF opened at full size. All of it stays on our address rather than reaching out on its own.

What can you do on GIPHY through TrickyBird?

Look for a GIF and find it. The home page arrives with the trending grid in place, the categories and channels you reach from there open, and a search fills a page with results you can actually watch, stickers alongside the GIFs. That was on a desktop, with no account and no setup on either side.

GIPHY shows a consent banner on a first visit, and it lies over the grid rather than standing in front of it, so the results are already loaded behind it while you decide. It is GIPHY’s own banner and it appears on a direct visit just the same.

Signing in is the gap, and it is a real one. No check of ours has been near it, so this page will not tell you either way. Your favorites and your own uploads sit behind that login, and a guess about them is worth nothing to you. What we did try is the thing most people open GIPHY for, which is finding one GIF to send somewhere else, and that worked. If your search for a picture takes you elsewhere, Imgur has a page of its own.

Where this stops is easy to say. TrickyBird is for reaching a public site your network blocks, and for keeping your IP address away from that site. It is not a way into somebody else’s account, and not a route around a payment or a copyright.

Who sees what while you browse GIPHY?

What arrives at GIPHY is a request from TrickyBird, so your own IP address stays out of it. Your network sees a connection to TrickyBird, with the GIPHY address riding inside ours, encoded rather than spelled out.

On our side, the edge keeps a short access log to run the service and stop abuse: a shortened form of your IP address, the hostname of the site you connected to, and basic response details, kept for at most 48 hours. Questions

Do the GIFs actually load, or only the page around them?

They load. The trending grid comes up with its GIFs moving, and they reach you by the same address the page does. On a site that is almost nothing but media, that second half is what separates a grid you can look at from a grid of empty rectangles, and it is the part a proxy has to get right.

Can I sign in to my GIPHY account through TrickyBird?

We have not tried it, so this page will not tell you either way. Everything above was done signed out: the trending grid, the categories, and a search that returned a full page of results. Your favorites and your own uploads are behind that login, and it is one thing our checks have not reached.

Does this work on a device I cannot install anything on?

Yes. TrickyBird runs in the browser that is already open, so a managed laptop or a borrowed machine that refuses new software still gets to GIPHY. That is where the usual advice trips: a VPN needs an installer and an administrator to approve it, and that approval is what such a device is set up to withhold.

Why is GIPHY blocked at school or at the office?

Usually because of the group it was filed under rather than anything about GIPHY itself. Filters close whole categories at once, so a GIF library goes dark alongside the video and social sites the rule was aimed at. The same address can be dead on one network and perfectly fine on the next.

Is opening GIPHY through TrickyBird legal?

This is general information, not legal advice. Reaching a public site is usually a question of the rules where you are rather than the law, and those rules differ by place. Read the policy of the network you are on, and do not use TrickyBird for piracy or to get past a payment.
