Unblock DeviantArt, from Daily Deviations to a full-size piece

When a DeviantArt page will not load, the decision was made by the network you are on, not by DeviantArt. TrickyBird opens it from a browser tab: paste the address, press Launch, and the site comes up in the same tab through TrickyBird’s own address, with nothing to install and no account to create.

A filter rarely has anything against DeviantArt specifically. It sits in the art and image-sharing category, so when a network switches that category off, DeviantArt goes with it. China is the harder version of the same thing: the site has been blocked there since December 2008, and independent measurement from OONI over the past 24 months recorded 0 successful connections against 282 blocking signals. Your browser only connects to TrickyBird, which leaves no deviantart.com request for a filter to match.

The claims on this page come from our own tests. 6 live checks cover the home feed, the Daily Deviations feed, search, a single deviation page, a user gallery, and the sign-in page, and all 6 pass. The art loads rather than turning into empty frames: the same number of images on every surface, and a deviation’s picture at the same decoded and rendered size as a direct visit. It took 0 gateway changes to get there.

DeviantArt in our own tests

All 6 live checks pass: the home feed, Daily Deviations, search, a deviation page and a user gallery render, and the art loads at the same image counts and sizes as a direct visit. Signing in works as well: we signed in through TrickyBird on the live service, and the signed-in feed, notifications and our own gallery all opened. 0 requests left the browser for a deviantart.com or Wix media host, including on a run with those hosts blocked outright.

The address here is TrickyBird’s own, never the address of the site you opened

The site loads in the tab, but its address stays out of your URL bar and off the page you see.

How does TrickyBird open DeviantArt?

Your browser talks to TrickyBird, and TrickyBird fetches DeviantArt for you. It rewrites the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript so every link, thumbnail, and request points back through its own address, and a small script stays in the tab to catch whatever loads as you move down a feed or open a deviation. On every surface we measured, 0 requests from the browser reached a deviantart.com or Wix media host.

The artwork itself is the part that usually breaks. DeviantArt does not serve it from its own domain: the files come from Wix media hosts under signed URLs, and a signature is easy to invalidate when a proxy rewrites the link around it. Those signatures survive here, which is why a gallery fills with pictures instead of empty frames.

We ran the same pages again with every direct request to those hosts blocked outright, the way a network that really filters DeviantArt behaves. They rendered identically and still made 0 direct requests. That second run is the one worth doing: a page can look complete on an open network while quietly leaning on a request a filtered network would drop.

What works on DeviantArt through TrickyBird?

Without an account you get most of the site: the home feed and Daily Deviations, search, tag pages, profiles and user galleries, individual deviations at full size, the comment threads under them, and video deviations that play in the page. DeviantArt is not the only art or image site our tests cover. Flickr, Imgur, and Pinterest have pages of their own.

Nothing installs on your side, and TrickyBird has no sign-up, so a managed work laptop that refuses new software can still open the site. Opening it is the same action as opening any other page.

TrickyBird is for reaching a public site your network blocks, and for keeping your IP address away from that site. It is not a way into an account that is not yours, and not a way past paywalls or copyright.

Is your DeviantArt browsing private through TrickyBird?

DeviantArt sees the connection coming from TrickyBird rather than from your IP address, and the network you are on sees a connection to TrickyBird rather than to DeviantArt. The DeviantArt name stays out of the URL, off the page, and out of the requests your browser sends, which is the part a filter would otherwise match on.

On our side, the edge keeps a short access log to run the service and stop abuse: a shortened form of your IP address, the hostname of the site you connected to, and basic response details, kept for at most 48 hours. It does not record which deviations you opened, and there is no TrickyBird account for any of it to attach to. Our privacy page has the full picture.

Questions

Does the art load at full size, or just the page around it?

It loads. We opened the same deviation directly and through TrickyBird, side by side. The picture decoded to the same 503x236 pixels and rendered at the same 884x414 in both, and every surface returned the same number of images. That is the comparison that catches a page rendering with holes where the art should be.

Does it work on a device I cannot install anything on?

Yes, that is the case it is built for. TrickyBird runs in the browser tab you already have, with nothing to download and no admin rights to ask for, so it opens on a managed work laptop or a borrowed computer where a VPN app will not install.

Do I need a DeviantArt account to browse?

No. The home feed, Daily Deviations, search, tag pages, profiles, galleries, and individual deviations open signed out, with the comment threads under them, and TrickyBird has no sign-up of its own. An account matters for your own gallery, your favorites, or posting. Signing in works through TrickyBird too: we signed in on the live service, and the signed-in feed, notifications and our own gallery opened normally.

Is DeviantArt blocked in China?

Yes, and it has been since December 2008. Independent measurement from OONI recorded 0 successful connections from China over the past 24 months, against 282 blocking signals in the same period. That makes it a standing national block rather than an occasional outage, so it is not something a different Wi-Fi network in the country fixes.

Is DeviantArt blocked in Russia or Indonesia?

Not now. Both restricted it briefly over specific content and then lifted the restriction. Russia blocked deviantart.com on 3 August 2021 and unblocked it on 11 August 2021 once the content was taken down, and Indonesia blocked it for 4 days in October 2023. Current measurement shows the site reachable in both.

Is opening DeviantArt through TrickyBird legal?

This is general information, not legal advice. Reaching a public site is usually a question of your network’s or your employer’s rules rather than the law, and those rules differ by place. China, where DeviantArt is blocked nationally, is a different situation from a filter at the office. Check the policy you are under, and do not use TrickyBird for piracy or to get past paywalls.
