Unblock DeviantArt, from Daily Deviations to a full-size piece

When a DeviantArt page will not load, the network you are on made that decision, not DeviantArt. TrickyBird opens it from a browser tab: paste the address, press Launch, and the site comes up in the same tab through TrickyBird’s own address, with nothing to install and no account to create.

A filter rarely has anything against DeviantArt specifically. It sits in the art and image-sharing category, so when a network switches that category off, DeviantArt goes with it. Mainland China is the harder version of the same thing: the site has been blocked there since December 2008, and independent measurement from OONI over the past 24 months recorded 0 successful connections against 282 blocking signals. Art is the reason anyone opens DeviantArt, and the art arrives at full size rather than as empty frames: in a feed, in a gallery, and on a deviation page opened on its own. That is what we saw going through the site on a desktop, sign-in page included.

Is deviantart.com blocked on your network?

The check asks deviantart.com for one small file directly from your connection, not through TrickyBird, so your network can see that request like any direct visit.

How does TrickyBird open DeviantArt?

TrickyBird fetches DeviantArt on its own servers and rewrites what comes back, so every link, thumbnail, and request in the page points at TrickyBird instead of at DeviantArt. A small script rides along in the tab and catches what loads later, as you move down a feed or open a deviation. Through all of it, your browser does not connect to deviantart.com. Its requests go to one of our own addresses, which carries the DeviantArt address inside it, encoded rather than spelled out.

The artwork is the part that usually breaks. DeviantArt does not serve it from its own domain: the files come from a separate media host under signed links, and a signature is easy to invalidate when a proxy rewrites the link around it. Those signatures survive here, which is why a gallery fills with pictures instead of empty frames.

Once the page is running, nothing in it goes looking for DeviantArt, or for the host the artwork sits on. On a network that blocks the site outright, a gallery that reached out on its own would simply stop filling.

What works on DeviantArt through TrickyBird?

Without an account you get most of the site: the feeds, search and tag pages, profiles and galleries, a deviation at full size with the comments under it, and video deviations that play in the page. DeviantArt is not the only art or image site our tests cover. Flickr, Imgur, and Pinterest have pages of their own.

Nothing installs on your side, and TrickyBird has no sign-up, so a managed work laptop that refuses new software still opens the site. Opening it takes the same permission as opening any other page.

TrickyBird is for reaching a public site your network blocks, and for keeping your IP address away from that site. It is not a way into an account that is not yours, and not a way past paywalls or copyright.

Is your DeviantArt browsing private through TrickyBird?

Both directions are covered. DeviantArt sees the connection arriving from TrickyBird rather than from your IP address, and your network gets a connection to TrickyBird, because your browser does not connect to deviantart.com: that address rides inside one of ours, encoded rather than spelled out.

On our side, the edge keeps a short access log to run the service and stop abuse: a shortened form of your IP address, the hostname of the site you connected to, and basic response details, kept for at most 48 hours. Does the art load at full size, or just the page around it?

It loads. We opened the same deviation through TrickyBird and directly, and the picture came through at full size both ways rather than as a thumbnail or an empty frame. Feeds and galleries fill in the same way, which is what catches a page rendering with holes where the art should be.

Does it work on a school or work computer?

Yes, and that is the whole reason to do this in a browser. There is nothing to download and no admin prompt, so a managed work laptop or a school computer opens the site even though a VPN app on it would stop at the installer.

Do I need a DeviantArt account to browse?

No. The feeds, Daily Deviations, search, tag pages, profiles, galleries, and individual deviations all open signed out, comment threads included, and TrickyBird has no sign-up of its own. An account matters for your own gallery, your favorites, or posting. Signing in works through TrickyBird too: we signed in on the live service, and the signed-in feed, the notifications and our own gallery opened normally.

Is DeviantArt blocked in mainland China?

Yes, and it has been since December 2008. Independent measurement from OONI recorded 0 successful connections from mainland China over the past 24 months, against 282 blocking signals in the same period. That makes it a standing national block rather than an occasional outage, so it is not something a different Wi-Fi network in the country fixes.

Is DeviantArt blocked in Russia or Indonesia?

Not now. Both restricted it briefly over specific content and then lifted the restriction. Russia blocked deviantart.com on 3 August 2021 and unblocked it on 11 August 2021 once the content was taken down, and Indonesia blocked it for 4 days in October 2023. Current measurement shows the site reachable in both.

Is opening DeviantArt through TrickyBird legal?

This is general information, not legal advice. Reaching a public site is usually a question of your network’s or your employer’s rules rather than the law, and those rules differ by place. Mainland China, where DeviantArt is blocked nationally, is a different situation from a filter at the office. Check the policy you are under, and do not use TrickyBird for piracy or to get past paywalls.
