Unblock YouTube without a VPN or an app to install
YouTube is usually the first address to go when a network filter switches on, blocked for bandwidth and for keeping people on task rather than for anything on the site. You can still open it in the browser you already have: paste the link into TrickyBird, press Launch, and the video plays in the same tab.
The advice you were given is to install a VPN app, and installing is exactly what the device in front of you will not allow. A managed work laptop with no admin rights refuses the installer, and usually the browser extension too, so the VPN fails before the network filter gets a say. TrickyBird is a web proxy that runs in a browser tab, so opening it takes the same permission as opening any other page, which is none.
The part that usually fails on YouTube is the video itself. YouTube builds its player in JavaScript after the page arrives and pulls the video down in small pieces while you watch, and a proxy that carries only the first page hands you the layout and a black rectangle. Through TrickyBird a standard /watch video plays with sound, and we have sat and watched one run, on a desktop and on a phone. Each piece of video comes back through TrickyBird’s own address, so your browser never has to reach out to the server it came from.
What to expect from YouTube
A standard /watch video plays with sound in the tab, and we watched that happen on a desktop and on a phone.
Is youtube.com blocked on your network?
The check asks youtube.com for one small file directly from your connection, not through TrickyBird, so your network can see that request like any direct visit.

How does TrickyBird open YouTube?
YouTube is not a plain web page. It is a large JavaScript app that assembles the player after the page has loaded, then fetches the video in small pieces as you watch. A proxy that rewrites the first page and stops there gets you as far as the shell, which is where most of them stop: the layout is there, the player stays black.
TrickyBird carries the video itself. Driving YouTube’s own player through a proxy trips the site’s bot check and stalls, so TrickyBird asks YouTube for the stream the way a TV app would and plays it back with its own player inside your tab. Nothing extra runs on your machine and there is no helper app in the middle.
Every piece of video is fetched through TrickyBird and rewritten on the way, so your browser never connects to the server it came from, and that server’s address rides inside one of ours, encoded rather than spelled out. What the network you are on sees is a connection to TrickyBird.
What works and what to expect on YouTube?
You came to watch something, and that is the part this page stands behind: a standard /watch video plays with sound, and moving around the site between videos behaves the way it does on a direct visit. If it is a live stream rather than an upload you are after, Twitch has a page of its own.
No YouTube account is needed to watch. If you want your history, your subscriptions, or a saved playlist, sign in to YouTube itself the usual way. TrickyBird never asks you for an account, because it does not have any.
Does YouTube see your real IP through TrickyBird?
No. TrickyBird connects to YouTube for you, so what arrives at YouTube is TrickyBird’s address rather than yours. It works in the other direction too: your browser does not connect to youtube.com, and that address travels inside one of ours, encoded rather than spelled out, so someone watching the network sees a connection to TrickyBird. But the page itself is not clean yet. Some of YouTube’s own links keep the youtube.com spelling right there in the HTML, and anyone who opens the page source will find it. Nothing loads through those links, so no request goes out, but the name is in the markup.
TrickyBird does reach YouTube on your behalf, and to run the service and stop abuse the edge keeps a shortened form of your IP address, the hostname of the site you connected to, and basic response details, kept for at most 48 hours. Which videos you watched is not part of that, and there is no account for any of it to attach to.
