Unblock Mixcloud and listen to a full DJ set

To unblock Mixcloud, paste the link to a show into TrickyBird and press Launch. It opens in the same browser tab, on one of our own addresses, and the mix plays there: a 2-hour DJ set started for us and kept running, the clock advancing rather than a player sitting still on a page that had otherwise loaded fine. Nothing gets installed on the way, and we do not ask you to register.

A filter almost never has anything against Mixcloud itself. Mixcloud sits in the music and audio-streaming category, and when a network closes that category, everything filed under it goes at the same moment, a radio archive going down alongside the video sites the filter was aimed at. What you read next is usually to install a VPN app, on a machine whose entire policy is that you do not install things. A web proxy has no installer to refuse. You open it in the tab already in front of you.

Mixcloud is also not a track-by-track library, which is worth knowing before you open it. What lives there is DJ mixes, radio shows and curated sets, often an hour or 2 long, and keeping one of those running through a proxy is a different job from carrying a 3-minute song. Your browser does not connect to mixcloud.com: its requests go to one of our own addresses, which carries the Mixcloud address inside it, encoded rather than spelled out.

What to expect from Mixcloud

We opened a 2-hour DJ set through TrickyBird and it played, with the clock advancing rather than a player sitting still, and the grid of shows came up with its artwork around it. That was on a desktop, signed out; signing in is not something we have tried.

Is mixcloud.com blocked on your network?

The check asks mixcloud.com for one small file directly from your connection, not through TrickyBird, so your network can see that request like any direct visit.

One of our addresses, with the site’s encoded into it

The site loads in the tab you are already in, and this address will not always look the same, since sometimes it is only numbers.

How does the audio reach your browser?

TrickyBird asks Mixcloud for the page and rewrites what comes back before it reaches you: every link, every piece of cover art and every request the page will make later points at our own address instead of Mixcloud’s. A small script stays in the tab afterwards and does the same for the rest of the grid as you scroll it.

The audio deserves a paragraph of its own. Mixcloud does not leave a file in the page for the player to collect. It builds the stream inside the tab, out of pieces requested one after another while the mix is already going, which is how SoundCloud does it too, and it means a proxy that rewrote only the parts written into the HTML would leave you looking at a correct page in silence. Those later pieces travel through TrickyBird as well, which is why the player has anything to play at all.

What opens, and what we have not tried

Signed out, the home page arrives whole: the grid of shows with their artwork, the browse pages you reach from it, and the page of a show itself. Open a mix and it plays. We listened to a 2-hour DJ set through the proxy on a desktop, and it started with the clock advancing rather than a player sitting still. The grid keeps its artwork too, which matters more than it sounds: a wall of empty boxes is how a proxied media site usually announces that only the text made it through.

Signing in is the gap, and it is a real one. No check of ours covers it, so we have not tried it and this page does not claim it. Your follows and your saved shows sit behind that login, and we would rather leave the question open than guess at the answer.

TrickyBird is for reaching a public site your network blocks, and for keeping your IP address away from that site. What opens here is free listening, played the way Mixcloud serves it. It is not a door into somebody else’s account, and not a route around a payment or a copyright. If your listening is spread around, SoundCloud has a page of its own.

What Mixcloud sees, and what your network sees

What arrives at Mixcloud is a request from TrickyBird, so your own IP address stays out of it. What your network sees is a connection to TrickyBird, with the address of the show carried inside ours, encoded rather than spelled out.

On our side, the edge keeps a short access log to run the service and stop abuse: a shortened form of your IP address, the hostname of the site you connected to, and basic response details, kept for at most 48 hours. Our privacy page has the full picture.

Questions

Will a long mix keep playing, or does only the page load?

It keeps playing. We started a 2-hour DJ set signed out, and the clock moved rather than a player sitting frozen on a page that had drawn correctly. The stream is put together inside the tab from pieces fetched while you listen, and those pieces travel through TrickyBird too, which is the part a long mix depends on.

Will this work on a machine I cannot install software on?

Yes, because there is no software involved on your side. You open a page and start listening. An app for music, or a VPN, would need an installer and an administrator to approve it, and that approval is exactly what a managed laptop or a borrowed machine is set up to withhold.

Can I sign in to my Mixcloud account?

We have not tried it, so this page will not tell you either way. Everything above was done signed out, up to and including a full set playing. If you want your own follows and your saved shows, that is between you and Mixcloud, and the sign-in form is one thing our checks have not reached.

Why is Mixcloud blocked where I am?

Usually because of the category it falls into rather than anything on Mixcloud. Filters group sites and close music and video as one lot, so the same address can be dead on the network you are using and perfectly fine on the next one. It is rarely a decision anybody made about Mixcloud in particular.

Is opening Mixcloud through TrickyBird legal?

This is general information, not legal advice. Reaching a public site is usually a question of the rules where you are rather than the law, and those rules differ by place. Check the policy of the network you are on, and do not use TrickyBird for piracy or to get past a payment.
