Unblock Hugging Face, from the model index to a single model card

A Hugging Face page that will not load is your network’s decision, not Hugging Face’s. Paste the address into TrickyBird, press Launch, and the site arrives in the same tab through TrickyBird’s own address, with nothing to install and no account to create.

A filter rarely has anything against Hugging Face in particular. It sits in the AI category, so when a network switches that category off, Hugging Face goes with it. Mainland China is the harder version of the same thing: the site has been blocked there since 2023, confirmed by Hugging Face itself, and independent measurement from OONI since January 2025 recorded 185 blocking signals in 195 measurements of huggingface.co, plus 71 in 71 on the www address. The check asks huggingface.co for one small file directly from your connection, not through TrickyBird, so your network can see that request like any direct visit.

How does TrickyBird open Hugging Face?

TrickyBird fetches Hugging Face on its own servers, rewrites the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript so every link, image, and request points back through its own address, and streams the result into your tab. A small script stays behind for what loads as you scroll a listing or open a model card. Your browser does not connect to huggingface.co; what it asks for is one of our own addresses, and the Hugging Face address rides inside that one, encoded rather than spelled out.

Hugging Face builds its pages on the server and then hands them to JavaScript in your browser, which re-attaches each listing to its own data. That second half is where a rewriting proxy usually shows its seams: the page paints, then the code behind it goes looking for something at the original address and finds nothing. Here that lookup stayed on TrickyBird’s address, so the grids fill in instead of stalling half-built.

Nothing about Hugging Face needs special treatment to open this way. The listings, the model cards and the docs behave through TrickyBird the way they behave on a direct visit.

What works on Hugging Face through TrickyBird?

Signed out you still get the parts of the site people come for. The model index and the dataset index render and fill in, and a search narrows either one. A model card opens with its README, its file browser, and its inference widget in place: we opened bert-base-uncased and read it straight through the proxy. The documentation reads normally too.

Signing in is first-party here. The username and password form lives on huggingface.co itself, with no outside identity provider in the middle, and that form renders through TrickyBird. Nothing this page describes needs an account: the models, the datasets, the cards and the docs are all readable signed out.

Hugging Face is not the only AI site our tests cover. Mistral answers questions with no account at all, and ChatGPT and Claude have pages of their own.

TrickyBird is for reaching a public site your network blocks, and for keeping your IP address away from that site. It is not a way into an account that is not yours, and not a way past paywalls or copyright.

Is your Hugging Face browsing private through TrickyBird?

Your IP address does not reach Hugging Face; TrickyBird’s does. In the other direction, your browser does not connect to huggingface.co, and that address travels encoded rather than spelled out inside one of ours, so the network you are on sees a connection to TrickyBird.

On our side, the edge keeps a short access log to run the service and stop abuse: a shortened form of your IP address, the hostname of the site you connected to, and basic response details, kept for at most 48 hours. Do I need a Hugging Face account to browse models and datasets?

No. The model index, the dataset index, search, model cards with their README and file browser, and the documentation all open signed out, and TrickyBird has no sign-up of its own. An account matters when you want to push a repository or reach a gated model. The sign-in form itself renders through TrickyBird as well.

Is Hugging Face blocked in mainland China?

Yes, and it has been since 2023, confirmed by Hugging Face itself. That is a standing national block rather than an occasional outage, so a different network inside the country does not fix it.

They load. In our own checks the model index and the dataset index fill in with real entries, a model search returns its results, and the bert-base-uncased card opens with its README and its file browser. What arrives is Hugging Face’s own content, not an empty frame waiting on something that never comes.

Can I open it on a locked-down work machine?

Yes. TrickyBird is a website, so a machine that refuses new software still opens it, in the browser already sitting on it. Nothing has to go onto the machine and there is no admin prompt to clear, which is where the usual advice to install a VPN stops dead.

Is opening Hugging Face through TrickyBird legal?

This is general information, not legal advice. Reaching a public site is usually a question of your network’s or your employer’s rules rather than the law, and those rules differ by place. Mainland China, where Hugging Face is blocked nationally, is a different situation from a filter at the office. Check the policy you are under, and do not use TrickyBird for piracy or to get past paywalls.
